HCSA 2024 AGM
The History Council of South Australia's Annual General Meeting will be held on Wednesday, 16 October 2024 at The Historian Hotel, 18 Coromandel Pl, Adelaide, 5:30pm for 6:00pm start.
The night will feature a talk by the 2024 Wakefield Press Essay Prize winner, Amanda Wells on 'Halting Chowilla Dam: a tale of drought, salt, science and politics in 1960s South Australia'.

History Council of South Australia 2025 Fellowship
Our annual HCSA Fellowship is now open.
The Fellowship is an annual prize of $2,000. It provides support for Australians researching and writing about South Australian history.
The HCSA Fellowship was launched on 21 August 2020 in association with the State Library of South Australia and through the generous support of donors, including the Marsden Szwarcbord Foundation.
Applications close on 15 November.

Save the Queen: The Priscilla Project
A project is underway to restore the Priscilla bus from the film 'The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert'. She was discovered on a property in rural New South Wales, having survived fire, floods, and exposure to the elements. The History Trust of South Australia is seeking donations to restore the bus and display her at the National Motor Museum in Birdwood.

Book launch: 'Her Great Adventure: Dorothy 'Puss' Campbell WW2 army nursing sister' by Dr. Janet Scarfe
Puss Campbell was one of nearly 3600 women to serve in the Australian Army Nursing Service in WW2. Her wartime service took her to England, Egypt, Palestine, Papua New Guinea, Queensland and back home to Adelaide.
Drawing on Puss's own daily diary and photographs, this book brings to light for the first time the sisters’ lives away from the wards – their travels, sightseeing, friendships and romances.
7 November, 5-6pm, Torrens Training Depot, Victoria Drive.
The event is free but bookings are essential by 1 November 2024.

Yuki (bark canoe): sharing Ngarrindjeri culture - in conversation
An opportunity to hear Ngarrindjeri Elder, Uncle Major 'Moogy' Summer in conversation with members of the Yuki project team. The panel discussion will centre around the yuki, its stories and significance in Ngarrindjeri culture, and how the exhibition captures the wonder and awe of the natural world.

Friends of the Library Discover event
Featuring Ashley Dennis-Henderson, winner of the 2023 Hugh Martin Weir Prize and PhD candidate in Applied Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Adelaide. She will present her research on how we can analyse the experiences of Australian World War I diaries and letters using mathematical and computational techniques.

Customs house precinct - buildings and occupancy from 1840
The Government Reserve was established in the ‘New Port’ in Oct 1840. The northern section is dominated by the State Heritage classified old Customs House and Telegraph Buildings. Learn more about these and their neighbors' (past and present) as well as the development of government services in Port Adelaide.

Workshop: Introduction to oral history
This workshop introduces oral history practice, focusing on research, ethics, equipment, interviewing techniques and transcribing. It is suitable for community volunteers, family historians, students or anyone with an interest in recording oral histories.

University of Adelaide historical and classical studies seminar series 2024
The next seminar will feature Penny Edmonds speaking on'The Curious Colonial Afterlife of the 1837 Select Committee Report on Aborigines: Settler Violence, Anti Slavery and Protection in Port Phillip and NSW' on 14 October. Seminars are held Mondays in Napier 420, 12pm.

The Journal of the Historical Society of South Australia
The next issue is scheduled to be published in November 2024 and they are inviting scholars from all disciplines who are researching South Australian history to submit papers, or proposals for papers, for inclusion in this, and subsequent editions. They would particularly like to encourage post-graduate student and early career researcher contributions.
