Land Services SA has been monitoring the level of attempted access to free historical searches
using guest accounts. Given a recent increase in the level of attempted access, and out of an
abundance of caution, Land Services SA in consultation with the Office of the Registrar-General have determined to remove guest account access to historical searches for the immediate future.
Land Services SA and Office of the Registrar-General are working together to implement a long-term solution that will allow appropriate access to historical searches going forward.
We apologise for any inconvenience and will keep you informed of developments.

*New SA history book alert!* Mary Lee: The life and times of a ‘turbulent anarchist’ and her battle for women’s rights, by Denise George, published by Wakefield Press
Mary Lee was among the suffragists whose work led to South Australia becoming one of the first places in the world to give women the vote, in 1894 – and the first in the world where women could be elected members of parliament. Denise George's biography Mary Lee, drawing on letters and journals, brings the story of an early Australian feminist activist to light.

Guide to collecting and preserving digital materials, Federation of Australian Historical Societies
The FAHS has developed, on commission, an online guide, authored by Sophie Shilling, to collecting and preserving digital materials. This guide aims to assist Australian historical societies in preserving their digital collections. The author hopes to have filled a gap in the current literature surrounding digital preservation, that being a practical, plain English guide covering all aspects of curating and keeping digital collections. Although digital preservation is a highly technical subject, the advice given in this guide demonstrates what is practical for small Australian historical societies. By following these guidelines, your newly created digital collections will have the best starting point to be preserved and accessible into the long-term. Any future digital preservation efforts will be made much easier. The guide assumes a reasonable level of computer literacy and offers further advice for those with more knowledge. Several digital preservation solutions have been provided, accounting for differing levels of funding, experience, equipment, and knowledge.
Also included is how to write digital preservation plans and policies, how to foster positive change in society and risk management of digital collections. It is recommended that this guide is read through from start to finish before embarking on a digital preservation project.
The guide can be accessed here.

You can also hear Prof Reynolds on Saturday 20 October when he delivers the Wilks oration at the Effective Living Centre at 7 pm. Click here for details about the Wilks Oration and to book.
Listening to the whispering in his own heart, Professor Henry Reynolds was led into the lives of remarkable and largely forgotten white humanitarians who followed their consciences and challenged the prevailing attitudes to Indigenous people. His now-classic book This Whispering in Our Hearts constructed an alternative history of Australia through the eyes of those who felt disquiet and disgust at the brutality of dispossession. These men and women fought for justice for Indigenous people even when doing so left them isolated and criticised by their fellow whites. The unease of these humanitarians about the morality of white settlement has not dissipated and their legacy informs current debates about reconciliation between black and white Australia.
Join the History Trust of South Australia and the Dunstan Foundation to hear Henry revisit this history, and bring fresh perspectives to issues we grapple with still.
