News

End of Year Thank You from the President
On behalf of the Executive Committee, thank you all for your support and hard work during 2023. It has been a very busy year and the HCSA is very grateful for the efforts of all its members and partner institutions. Winding down for a brief pause at year’s end, we continue to watch with interest a number of developments that we have offered public comment on, including the Riverlea development, and the cuts to history in universities, not least of all at ACU. We also continue to think about ways to advocate for fairer funding for our cultural institutions and archives. At the same time, we remember fondly some fantastic events from this year, such as bestowing our prizes and awards and our regional lecture in Whyalla. Enjoy the festive season and we look forward to recommencing our work again in early 2024.

Encounter Celebration Organisation: sculpture fundraising drive
The Encounter Celebration Organisation Victor Harbor Inc. (ECOVHI) is a non-profit organisation, committed to fostering knowledge and understanding of the role that the navigators and explorers Matthew Flinders and Nicolas Baudin played in our maritime history. Captain Matthew Flinders, commander of the Investigator and Captain Nicolas Baudin, commander of Le Géographe, met near Victor Harbor on 8th and 9th April, 1802, in Ramindjeri Ngarrindjeri Waters subsequently named Encounter Bay, by Matthew Flinders.

It is our intention to erect an interpretive sculpture in Victor Harbor which will tell the story of Flinders and Baudin and their part in the mapping of Australia. It will also provide an opportunity for the Ngarrindjerri people to have a platform to tell their history.

In an effort to raise the funds needed to complete this project we have been accepted by the Australian Cultural Foundation for them to receive donations on our behalf. Each donation will receive a taxation receipt. We have in principle approval to build the interpretive sculpture from The City of Victor Harbor and letters of support from, among others, History S.A., the French and British S.A. Consulates, Monument Australia, the Ngarrindjerri Aboriginal Commission.

We have received promises of in excess of $70,000 so far to complete our project, but need a roughly that amount again before we can start to build the sculpture.
To donate please visit the Australian Cultural Fund Website.

Highgate Park clarification
JFA Purple Orange (which has a long association with Highgate Park) is currently facilitating a Working Group on the future of the HFI Trust involving people living with disability, family members of former residents at Highgate Park, and other allies. In light of two recent items in the newsletter regarding Highgate Park, they have requested that the History Council share their view that “Highgate Park is owned by the Home for Incurables (HFI) Trust and its beneficiaries are South Australians living with disability. Therefore, it is essential that South Australians living with disability are at the centre of decision making about the future of the site.” They have further stated that “There is a process underway to sell Highgate Park that has the general support of the South Australian disability community. There has been an open multistage consultation process involving more than 360 people, which has determined ‘the value of the site to people living with disability is largely the monetary value it provides for the sustainability of the Trust into the future.’” They also note that the plan includes “a suitable memorial developed to honour the legacy of Julia Farr and the lives and experiences of people living with disability who spent time living at the site.”
