SA Digihistory Update
Susan Marsden, Marsden Szwarcbord Foundation

The internet has serious gaps when it comes to history, missing many records and historical works of the late 20th century. This gap has driven our SA Digihistory project: since 2021 the Marsden Szwarcbord Foundation has worked with you and other researchers to identify a ‘top 50’ of significant South Australian history books that are out of print and not digitised. (We shortlisted around 60). Under Susan Marsden’s direction, a ‘Digihistory group’ has shortlisted your nominations, and discussed how to get them back into print as e-books to borrow or buy.

Geoff Strempel, Director of the State Library of South Australia (and a member of the group), has been working with staff on issues of copyright and digitisation. This week he’s given us the good news that the library can scan and produce e-books of eight titles (five out of copyright and 3 published by the Libraries Board). We hope to ‘launch’ them during the History Festival in May.

MSzF will make a donation towards the work needed to determine copyright, permissions, scanning and producing e-books of the remaining titles.

Related news: Susan Marsden’s first volume history of the South Australian Housing Trust, Business, charity and sentiment …1936-1986, has been re-published by Untapped in e-book format and now in hard copy. You can borrow the e-book (via Borrowbox in SA) or buy the book from Booktopia.
