South Australian History Council Awards Ceremony and closing ceremony for the History Trust of South Australia’s History Festival
On Sunday 30 May, the History Council, History Trust and State Library co-hosted an event in the Mortlock Library to announce the recipients of the 2021 Historians’ Awards and Fellow, and the winner of the Wakefield Essay Prize, and to celebrate the end of a very successful History Festival.
We were lucky to have Keith Conlon to act as MC, and Rosemary Wanganeen to provide a moving and memorable welcome to County.
It was a pleasure and a privilege to recognise the achievements and contributions of the following Award winners:
South Australian History Council Fellow
Dr Rebecca Jones, ‘Drought, flood, heat and dust: living with extreme weather in arid Australia’
Wakefield Press Essay Prize
Connor Degan, ‘Setting the pioneer legend in stone: The memorialisation of Captain Charles Sturt in the early twentieth century’
Judges Commendation:
Rita Bogna: ‘Under siege: The Spanish flu in South Australia, 1919-1920’
Maggie Boult: ‘Smallpox and the office of the Colonial Surgeon in South Australia, 1839-1855’
Emerging Historian Award
Dr Anne Black, for her PhD and subsequent publication of Pendragon
Digital Technologies Award (Judges’ nomination and award)
Dr Kristy Kokekei and the History Trust of South Australia for the Talking History online series
Regional/Community Award
Jeffrey Noble, for two generations of dedicated oral history collection and historical research in Peterborough and environs
Historian of the Year Award
Will Sergeant, for his research and promotion of the Gay community in SA and the commemoration of the death of Dr Duncan (1972)
Lifetime Historian Award
Don Loffler, for his research and promotion of the history of the motor industry and Holden (GMH)
On behalf of the History Council, I congratulate all nominees and award recipients, and thank them all for their valuable and tireless contribution to the research and promotion of South Australian history.
I would also like to thank the History Trust, and in particular Britt Burton, for ensuring the event ran smoothly and for helping to make it such a success, and the State Library for allowing us the use of the beautiful Mortlock Library. Notice of AHA Annual General Meeting 2021
This year the Australian Historical Association Annual General Meeting will be held on 1 July 2021, 5-6pm AEST via Zoom. The meeting is open to all financial members of the AHA. Further details will be circulated closer to the meeting.
City of Adelaide Local History Group
A local history group for Adelaide is being established, with the first session being held 29 June, 2-3pm. The group will be convened by HCSA member and Flinders Historian Dr. David Faber.

Following a successful 2021 History Festival, Penfolds is joining the History Trust of SA to bring you a special Talking History event, held at the Penfolds Magill Estate Cellar Door, 15 June at 5pm.

Labour History Society Tom Sheridan Scholarship
Awarded annually to an applicant who best demonstrates their capacity or potential to make a significant contribution to our knowledge and understanding of the history of the Australian working class. Nominations are open for the 2022 Adelaide Festival Awards for Literature. Presented every two years during Adelaide Writer's Week, the awards include six national and five South Australian categories. Nominations close 30 June.

State Records Research Centre temporarily closed
From 8-22 June the Research Centre at Gepps Cross will be closed for minor refurbishments.

Peggy Brock and too many Captain Cooks
As part of this year's South Australian History Festival, Peggy Brock gave a talk accompanying the exhibition 'Captain Cook & The Art of Memorabilia'. A reproduction of her fascinating talk can be found on the Wakefield Press blog here.
Exhibition: Was ist los, Hahndorf?
In Rachel Harris's historical exhibition, early black-and-white photographs of Hahndorf have had a contemporary twist added to them - you may need to look hard to find the disruptions. Exhibition closes 20 June, 2021.

The State Theatre Company South Australia's popular series Tangent Talks is returning to the State Library. Before each show opens, panels of experts from the creative, academic, political, and medical worlds will gather to discuss and debate the hot topics of each show.

AHA History Graduates Survey
Do you have an undergraduate and/or postgraduate degree in history or related field? Then we want you to take our survey! The Australian Historical Association is conducting this survey:
- To gain a better understanding of the career pathways and employability of all those with an undergraduate or postgraduate degree in history or a degree that was historically-focused.
- To facilitate wider discussion of diverse employment pathways for history graduates.
- To identify and address issues relating to the employability of history graduates.
The survey is open from 1 March to 30 June 2021. We are hoping to capture the diverse experiences of as many history graduates as possible so please circulate the link below to your networks!
