Annual Regional Lecture 2021

About this Event: Vice-Regal: A History of the Governors of South Australia

This year the annual regional lecture is to be given by Professor Philip Payton of Flinders University. It is taking place at the Bridgeport Hotel, Murray Bridge from 6pm-7:30pm, Wednesday 1 December 2021. The event is hosted in conjunction with the Rural City of Murray Bridge, the Murray Bridge Historical Society, and Wakefield Press, with nibbles and a drink being provided. The event will be followed by dinner at the Bridgeport Hotel (at the attendees own expense).

Philip Payton will talk about his new book Vice-Regal: A History of the Governors of South Australia, recently published by Wakefield Press and already ‘flying off the bookshelves’ in local shops. As Professor Payton will explain, the Governors – and their wives – have played pivotal roles in the development of South Australia. Sometimes idiosyncratic and often forceful characters, with the occasional whiff of scandal, these Governors and their families have added immeasurably to the colourful history of the State. In this talk, Philip takes a look at some of these intriguing lives – a fascinating story that, as we shall hear, finds a place for Murray Bridge and the mighty Murray River.
Copies of Philip's book will be available for purchase at the event. For more on Philip's book, see here.
