What is the Future of History in South Australia?
Thursday 2.30-4pm, 24 May 2012 at the State Library of SA
A lively panel of speakers will identify major challenges and opportunities facing South Australia’s history and heritage communities before responding to questions and comments from the audience. This forum is for anyone interested in the future of history in this state.
Discussion may include:
- Creating a love of history in students-will the national curriculum help or hinder?
- Does the past matter to young people?
- Is social media the answer?
- Generational change and succession planning for volunteer organisations?
- Is the government allocating enough resources?

* Prime Minister’s Literary Awards- Prize for Australian History
The Prize for Australian History is now part of the Prime Minister’s Literary Awards. This Prize is awarded to an individual or a group for an outstanding publication or body of work that contributes significantly to an understanding of Australian history – and it’s not just for books.
Eligible works can include a published book, website, film or radio documentary, CD-ROM, DVD, other form of multimedia or a series of these works.
To be eligible, the work must be first published, produced or broadcast between 1 January 2011 and 31 December 2011.

*On 4 August 2011, as curtain-raiser to the State History Conference 2011, the HCSA will be proud to present one of Australia’s most distinguished and original historians, Dr John Hirst of La Trobe University, to deliver the Annual History Council lecture on ‘South Australia and Australia – Reflections on their Histories’.
Born and educated in Adelaide, Dr Hirst is well-known both for his wide-ranging historical scholarship (as evidenced in numerous books, including Adelaide and the Country 1870-1914, Convict Society and Its Enemies, and Sense and Nonsense in Australian History) and his willingness to participate in contemporary political and social debate.
Bookings for Dr Hirst’s lecture will open on 1 July.
